Leo

Leo Jesse McLoskey was a Captain in the First Tank Battalion. He was killed on September 16th, 1944, in the WWII Battle of Peleliu.

WWII letters. This collection of over 225 letters includes the original envelopes, scanned letters, and transcribed text for easier reading.

Special thanks to Mary Alice McLoskey (Toal) for saving the letters, and Margret Gail McLoskey (McNitt) for transcribing them.

Photographs. A collection of images from Leo’s time in service. His letters mention many more. I so wish I could find them, but do enjoy the ones we have.

Artifacts. These are physical reminders of Leo. Many of these items were sent home by Leo. Others were awarded after his death.

Special thanks to those who saved these items, including Robert (Bobby) McLoskey and Anne McLoskey (Romine).

News Articles. These news stories and obituaries tell a portion of Leo’s story. It is interesting to note that they are not always 100% accurate. Resolving inconsistencies with Leo’s letters, his military records, and various news stories was both frustrating and fun.

Videos. This collection of videos links includes military training videos. The most poinent video is Bob Hope’s commentary on the show given to the 1st Marine Division prior to the battle of Peleliu.

Resources. A collection of various resources I found helpful when researching Leo and WWII.
